Terezin

The Terezin memorial was built by emperor Josef II. as a baroque army fortress in the 18th century. This fortress was named Theresienstadt after his mother empress Marie Therese. This place became notorious after World War II, as a model concentration camp for Jews from all Europe, Gestapo prison and Jewish Ghetto.  Terezin was the largest concentration camp in Czech Republic during 1941-1945. More than 140 000 men, women and children were brought there from around the country, as well as from Germany, Holland, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Denmark. The majority of those who survived the malnutrition, forced labour and terrible living conditions were transported to the extermination camps situated in the east. Terezin was turned into a memorial in 1947 as a memento of modern European history.

Today, Theresienstadt Concentration Camp is open to the public and includes a museums as well as the possibility of visiting the former ghetto.
